Matthew Mayers has been a coin collector since receiving a Morgan silver dollar from his grandmother when he was 8 years old. In high school, he used money he earned from his job as a cashier to purchase high grade Morgan dollars, including from his early mentor, Phil Glazer, who was a dealer in Westchester County New York. He also attended most Stack's and Harmer auctions beginning in the 1980s, which is where he started purchasing type coins, with a focus on Bust and Seated coinage. He has viewed and purchased coins from many of the most important auctions in the past 40 years.

He has attended many of the ANA, FUN, Baltimore and Central States coin shows since the 80s where he was mentored by Jim McGuigan and Steve Fisher among others. Besides specializing in Bust, Liberty Seated and Barber coinage, Matt collects pioneer gold, Sutler tokens and other series of US coinage. Matt is a member of the ANA as well as the LSCC and JRCS. In 2023, he became a founding member of CAC Grading.
