Liberty Seated Dime Purchase Criteria: Eye Appeal, Original Surfaces and Full Strikes including a Full Head. Seated dimes that meet these combined attributes provide the best value for the money including being the easiest for resale when upgrading a collection. It is recommended that buyers consider these criteria when contemplating a purchase from any dealer.

Top 100 Varieties: Any Seated dime that conforms to requirements for inclusion in a Top 100 Varieties is denoted in the Variety column.

Rotated Reverses: Reverse images are best effort to capture the actual reverse rotation with respect to obverse position. If a rotated reverse is seen in the images, then this is how the dime appeared during photography and dime descriptions may not include specific comments as to the observation.

Gem $13000 New August 21! No Stars, Small Date, Gem Original, Gerry Fortin Collection.. Ex. Evergreen and Gerry Fortin Collections. An extraordinary gem in all regards as both sides are draped in warm frosted luster with rose-red and sea-green toning. The surfaces are fully pristine other than a single tick to the left of the clasp. The reverse was previously clashed with a Large Date obverse and presents die clash marks below DI(ME) and across the ribbons and stems. The Small Date punch can be easily distinguished by a round top 7 digit. The Small Date is the better of the two 1837 date punch varieties with the CAC census reported at 76 examples with only five finer. Heritage Auctions, 2003 Long Beach Sale, Lot #330. Gem $13500 New August 21! Large Stars, Gem Original. Ex.Evergreen and Gerry Fortin Collections. This 1838 Large Stars was among the numerous Gold CAC approved dimes within the Fortin Collection. Though overshadowed by three significantly shattered obverse dies, the F-104 obverse is also a compelling study with bold die crack through the rock and shield along with a second through star 9 and into the right field. This example radiates frosted luster from undisturbed surfaces with pastel sea-green and golden toning on the obverse and sky blue hues on the reverse. Cartwheels are equally impressive. Acquired during May, 2003 from the popular Teletrade platform. With its Gold CAC bean, this dime has claims to the condition census as the CAC population is 9 total at the MS66 and MS67 grades. Choice $2950 New August 20! Colorful toning, clean surfaces. Ex. Evergreen. The term "Partial Drapery" as applied to 1838 Dimes is a mis-nomer since it was not until 1840 that drapery was added to the front of the dimes. What appears to be partial drapery is a clashmark from a portion of the E of DIME from the reverse. This coin features a purple blue obverse with dark orange around the shield. The reverse is darker gold with blue iridescence around the periphery. The reverse also has strong clashing which confirms the F-108a designation.

Choice $2500 New August 17! Satiny Radiance, Near-Gem Original. Ex. Evergreen and Massachusetts Collections. Over the years of researching the Seated dime series, it has been noted that the 1840 Philadelphia dies were weakly hubbed as a rule as compared to the prior two years with the F-108 obverse being in noticeable low relief. I'm quite impressed with this near-gem Mint State example for several reasons. The soft satiny radiance is readily evident along with vibrant cartwheels under the office lamp. Superior to the Liberty Seated dime web-book plate coin in detail and overall presentation. The date brings a lower CAC census at 58 in all grades with 12 finer. Gem $12750 New August 21! Repunched 184, Exceptional Gem, Condition Rarity. Ex. Evergreen and Gerry Fortin Collections. A richly and colorfully toned dime that is a condition rarity with a strike that is complete. It is important to note that strike variations often plagued the With Stars design. The eye appeal is exceptional with a partially mirrored obverse and frosted reverse. Apricot-gray, blue, and golden-orange shades decorate the obverse while slate-gray gives way to orange-tinged borders on the reverse. The surfaces are entirely unabraded and a joy during 10x inspection. The repunching below the 184 digits is boldly defined while the reverse die is pristine prior to becoming excessively rusted during later usage. Gem $6750 New August 21! Tied for Finest, Gem Original. Ex. Evergreen and Gerry Fortin Collections. "Luster bomb" best describes this 1842 as granular mint frost is pervasive on both sides. Faint gold is noted within the obverse center and is amplified by the photography. The CAC census is reported at 40 total with five approved at the certified grade and none finer. Choice $6600 New August 20! Choice Original. Ex. Evergreen and Tenafly Collections. Silver gray surfaces are uniformly shaded to the naked eye, though under a glass a few bits of crust are evident on both sides. Luster is a consistent with the grade, and a touch sharper on the reverse. F-105, with a die lump inside of star 12, and a slightly upward sloping date. The survival of Branch Mint coinage in this level of preservation was strictly a matter of chance, as little attention was paid to mintmarks until the end of the 19th century. A quick glance at the Guide Book confirms this, with prices rapidly increasing at the EF and AU levels. This piece approaches the condition census, as PCGS reports seven pieces finer, none higher than MS65. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.0 (1998-2002) holder with CAC approval. New August 19! Double Die Obverse, Gem Original, Hammered Strike, Conservative Grading.. Ex. Evergreen. Lets start the description for this gem 1856 Small Date dime with a strong recommendation. Why? Most collectors don't understand that the 1856 date, though common, is notorious for weak and uneven strikes. Fully struck mint state examples that are not blast white or creamy white are rare! Enter into the equation this gem example that is housed in early PCGS old green holder. The strike is absolutely hammered throughout obverse and reverse without any signs of weakness. Every star, every vein in each wreath leaf and Liberty's head are deeply impressed and crisp. It is such a joy to inspect this piece with a 10x loupe. Choice $1365 Near Gem Original, Crusty Gray Patina, Active Mirrors, Fully Struck, Former Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. 2025 Black Friday Sale Offering - At GFRC, we like our Liberty Seated coinage, including proofs, to have 100% natural surfaces and crusty gray patina where possible. Gem $3360 Cameo Designation, Gem Original, Evergreen State Collection.. 2025 Black Friday Sale Offering - 1860 brought the introduction of the Longacre-Paquet Liberty Seated dime redesign. This new obverse design (Type 1) lasted only through 1861 before being promptly replaced with a more robust design (Type 2) that was less "delicate" and subject to rapid wear. The 1860 proof obverse exhibits a group of horizontal die lines starting from the sixth stripe in the shield and moving right, under the scroll at LIBE(RTY), and ending at the fold in Liberty's gown line. This superb gem example presents an opportunity to study the delicate design features. Accurately designated as a cameo given the heavily frosted main devices that are surrounded by mirrored fields. The PCGS certification is accurate as surfaces are entirely unabraded and free off the faintest hairlines. Gem $2665 Superb Gem Type 1 Obverse Presentation, Brilliant Reflective Mirrors, Tenafly Collection. Final Consignor Price Reduction! - What a pleasure to be again offering this magnificent 1860 proof strike that originated from the Washington State Collection. 1860 brought 1,000 proof strike with the newly engraved and hubbed Type 1 obverse design per Longacre-Paquet. Clashing is evident beneath DIME. This piece is tied for finest known at CAC with three other pieces. The overall CAC population is 24 pieces, and the CAC price guide is $7,200. Ex. GFRC. Gem $21000 New August 21! Tied for Finest, An Exceptional Gem. Ex. Evergreen and Gerry Fortin Collections. 1867 brought the lowest Philadelphia mintage with 6,000 struck. Mint State survivors are available in all grades with this lot being tied for finest at PCGS and CAC. An exceptional example with intense prooflike reflectance and colorful rose shaded centers surrounded by peripheral blues as struck with conspicuously striated dies. Partial wire rims are noted with a full obverse strike and near complete reverse other than the upper left wheat grains. F-102, with business strike from a single die pairing with a heavily clashed obverse only. Acquired via private treaty with no known auction records, though the lot is featured as the PCGS price guide plate coin. Choice $850 New August 15! Challenging in Mint State, Choice Original, Massachusetts Collection.. Ex. Evergreen and Massachusetts Collections. Few 1868 dimes have attained the Mint State grade, and when located, examples are typically struck from the F-112 die pairing with a weakly hubbed date and Liberty's head being partially impressed. The MS65 example, previously in Gerry's own Liberty Seated dime collection, also had a partial head. This example deserves special attention for its unquestionably original surfaces that exhibit lightly mirrored fields leading to ample reflectance under a bright light. Otherwise, the motifs are notably frosted. Making a third GFRC appearance after being sold into our long-term client's collection during April 2018. Surfaces are fully unabraded as is to be expected for a piece that is in the condition census. Strike is 100% complete though "delicate", which is typical for the die pairing. PCGS population is a scant five pieces with only one finer. No MS66 graded 1869-S dimes have been approved at CAC as an additional datapoint. Original $6950 New August 11! Price Reduction - High Grade Doubled Die Obverse, Bold Shield Doubling, Light Gray, Peripheral Gold. From Europe comes a high grade 1873 Arrows F-103 Doubled Die Obverse dime for die variety specialist consideration. This NGC AU53 example is fresh to market, to my knowledge. The doubling on the upper right shield is dramatic with a second counter clockwise rotated hubbing. Few examples are known at such a high grade level where the doubling is readily prominent and easily enjoyed. This new specimen offers even light gray surfaces along with a band of peripheral gold on both sides. Surfaces are steely reflective when placed under a bright light. A complete strike is readily evident on the obverse, which is critical for this variety while the reverse is weakly impressed at the upper left wheat grains. The two finest known examples are the Garner specimen which GFRC recently sold for $18,500 and an white NGC MS61 example which I have lost track of. During April 2018, the third finest known example, from the Gerry Fortin Reference Collection, was sold at $7000. This piece graded PCGS AU55 without CAC approval. Gem $5750 New August 15! Magnificent Gem, Granular Frosted Luster, Vibrant Cartwheels, Rare Die Pairing. Ex. Evergreen Collection. GFRC is thrilled to be offering one of the finest 1877-S dimes extant along with being a rare R5 die pairing per my research as published in the Liberty Seated Dime die variety online reference. This is a magnificent gem with granular frosted luster and vibrant cartwheels. A speckled natural gray patina overlays the obverse while the reverse is a lighter uniform gray with gold and rose shades appearing under angled lighting. The surfaces are meticulously preserved too! Now let's move on to the importance of this die pairing in terms of rarity. The F-111 variety is the last of the three different reverse die pairings (F-109, F-110, F-111) with Obverse 7. Reverse C, which was previously paired with the F-103 obverse, shows die wear and erosion at the denticles. There is considerable weakness in the lower left ribbon end and wreath leaves. The reverse die may have been polished after the F-103 die pairing. This is only the fourth F-111 example handled by GFRC with the next finest being a PCGS MS62 CAC example sold during May 2018. Clearly, the finest known F-111 extant. CAC has approved only 33 examples in all grades with five finer. The estimate CAC market value is currently $4900 which recognizes the 1877-S date rarity in full gem. An important offering that belongs in one of the finest Seated dime collections being assembled.
