Pricing Comments: Liberty Seated quarters are probably the most under valued seated coinage denomination. The full date and mintmark set is extremely difficult to complete due to length and individual date rarities. Weak strikes are also an ongoing issue for many dates including weak head and breast details and incomplete definition of reverse feathers. You will find competitive retail asking prices for nice original and problem free coins. Quarters with small issues will be discounted accordingly.

Rotated Reverses: Reverse images are best effort to capture the actual reverse rotation with respect to obverse position. If a rotated reverse is seen in the images, then this is how the quarter appeared during photography and the descriptions may not include specific comments as to the observation.

PCGS Rattler
5083620
Choice $1750 New May 13! PCGS Rattler. In a PCGS Gen. 1.2 (1986-1989) Rattler holder. An original white coin with strong creamy luster. Both sides are clean with hardly any disturbances. It is decently struck with some weakness at the center of Miss Liberty and the eagle's left facing wing and arrow nock. There are a few toning streaks on the obverse but the eye appeal is strong due to the stunning originality.

Briggs 2-C Choice $2900 Crusty Antique Gray, Early San Francisco Issue, Choice Original, Lasalle Collection. Consignor Price Reduction - The Seated community is well aware of the historical significance of initial San Francisco mint issues as nearly all went into western fronter circulation. Choice survivors are a prize as is the case for this 1856-S survivor from the Lasalle Collection. Worthy of it GFRC-Choice quality rating, this lot presents silver-gray colored surfaces that are undoubtedly original. Further valuation arises from "dirt" with the protected areas. The date is very scarce is EF and rare in AU rendering this offering as being quite compelling. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder.

Choice $950 Unquestionably Original, Rose-Gray Patination, Premium Surfaces. This steely-frosted 1858 Seated quarter presents pleasing luster under a bright light with overall eye appeal being substantially better than my images. The lightly mottled rose-gray patina provides little contrast for the GFRC camera resulting in darker flat looking images. Believe me, this lot is a lot of fun under angled lighting and is a testament to the appearance of strict originality. The CAC census is 101 for this "common date" and with price guide at $850 that jumps to $1450 at the next grade. Please try to get beyond the images to give this piece a "shot". Choice $1950 Rare San Francisco Date, Choice Original, West Texas Collection. The 1858 San Francisco Seated quarter issue becomes extremely challenging in EF and above, and it's no slouch at this VF30 grade level either. The West Texas Collection is back with a boldly struck example that is undoubtedly original given the amount of "dirt" in the protected areas. This offering combines natural steely gray surfaces with background blues when viewed under a bright light. The obverse strike is nearly complete with center points on all stars other than #13 while the reverse is nicely uniform. Mintage is only 121,000 during the formative mining town period on the western frontier. Though not offered with a CAC green bean, this is certainly a pleasing example. Housed in a PCGS Gen 5.0 (2015) holder.

Briggs 2-B Choice $2000 Difficult Early San Francisco Date, Rose-Gray Patina, LaSalle Collection.. The 1858-S Seated quarter issue becomes especially difficult in EF and better grade, and it's no slouch at this VF30 level either. The LaSalle Collection specimen is a choice survivor with natural rose-gray patination overlaying steely fields. The toning is deeper surrounding the stars and reverse legend. The Obverse strike is typical while the reverse is nicely uniform. Surfaces a minimally abraded and pleasing given the time in circulation within western mining town communities. A quality lot that is housed in a PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder.

This coin is very difficult to price due to the recent sale of a gem PCGS-XF40 CAC for $18,000, more than triple the CPG retail price. Decently struck with the large S mintmark of this era. Briggs 1-A Choice $1650 Rare San Francisco Date, Smooth Surfaces, Choice Original. Ex. Tenafly Collection. The 1859-S is a well-known low mintage date in the quarter series that becomes non-existent at the Mint State level. This coin is exceptional for the grade with remarkably smooth surfaces for a F-15 example. Pleasing, medium gray patina covers both sides with light crust around the left stars. The CAC population report indicates 21 approved pieces in all grades with an incremental three CACG holdered. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with CAC approval. A collector of circulated quarters would be hard pressed to find a more attractive example in the F/VF band, as Briggs notes most pieces come with problems. PCGS #5450.

Briggs 1-A Original $1125 Rare San Francisco Date, Light Gray, Bold Devices at Grade. GFRC Cost Basis! - During 1859, the still relatively new San Francisco mint struck only 80,000 Seated quarters. That mintage entered western frontier commerce and remained there for years. Indeed, not even a single Mint State example is known, as no one systematically collected this coinage at the time of issue. Present day collectors struggle to locate the date due to low survival rates. GFRC is pleased to offer this newly purchased example with light gray shades including darker gray at the peripheries. PCGS was tough on this example as there is a substantial amount of device details for the certified grade. A solid example that will fill that long standing hole in a date and mintmark set without breaking the bank. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder.

Briggs 1-A Choice $325 Early Die State, Choice Original, Natural Coin Gray, LaSalle Collection. 2025 Black Friday Sale Offering - The 1860-O issue is accessible in all grades through AU given its mintage of 388,000, though not "common". Briggs 1-A specimens will be found with early and later die states whereby the obverse was heavily polished resulting in weak or missing denticles from 4:00 to 8:00. This example was struck prior to the die maintenance event as the obverse denticles are nicely raised and bold. Natural coin gray patina coats both sides with an ebony toning streak on the obverse. The struck is well executed from the new Type II/II design hubs. Housed in new NGC holder with special John McCloskey Collection pedigree holder.

Briggs 2-B Original $2875 Key San Francisco Date, Residual Frosted Luster, LaSalle Collection. Consignor Price Reduction - 1861 San Francisco Seated quarter offering which brings the distinction of being the key west coast mint date in the series. Mintage is documented at 96,000 units with few saved from California gold mining town commerce. Nearly the entire mintage was placed into circulation and remained there until well worn or lost. This survivor is noteworthy for its limited wear and residual frosted luster under a bright light. Device are bold and well defined for the issue. Light gray toning covers both sides with enhanced ebony on the central reverse. Examining the PCGS population report, this date thins out quickly at the VF35 to EF45 level with few finer. This LaSalle Collection release is an important opportunity for the advanced collector. Housed in new large font NGC holder.

Briggs 2-A Original $4830 Better San Francisco Date, Original Frosty Luster, Creamy Tan-Rose Patina, Lakeland Collection. 2025 Black Friday Sale Offering - In Mint State, 1862 San Francisco struck quarters are scarce and occasionally available. However, most of the known examples are seen less than fully choice. The 1862-S is more likely to appear in MS62 than any other grade, and the best examples top out at MS64. This Lakeland Collection example brings a second appearance on the GFRC price list as originally from the Sunset Point Collection, a complete set of Seated quarters sold during the 2016-2020 timeframe. Underlying steely frosted fields are overlaid with a creamy tannish-rose patination, the colors being accurately illustrated in my images. A fully struck example that is priced below CDN bid at $5500. A opportunity from the Lakeland Collection. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 holder.

Some die clashing can be seen on the reverse.

Semi-Key San Francisco Date, Choice Overall, Lakeland Collection. Given its mintage of only 41,000 pieces, the 1865 San Francisco date is a semi-key date in the Liberty Seated quarter series. Any choice example in EF or better is considered rare as GFRC has only handled a single EF45 and AU58 up until this Lakeland Collection consigned example. Like other dates of the period, heavy circulation in western frontier mining towns took its toll on survivors. This example is well preserved with even gray surfaces and golden highlights at the stars and legend. Fields offer a steely appearance under a bright light. There is enough residual "dirt" that validates the originality. I must suspect that this lot would be a serious upgrade for serious fans of the series. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2025) holder.

Briggs 1-A Original $1600 Semi-Key San Francisco Date, Original Dirty Surfaces, Lakeland Collection. The Lakeland Collection released not one but two 1865-S Liberty Seated quarters for the price list. This VF35 example is a survivor from California mining towns with moderate wear and a substantial amount of "dirt", especially on the reverse motifs. Mintage is a low 41,000 pieces with the late die states exhibiting a ground down lower obverse die with the top of the 86 date digits being weak or even partial on lower grade specimens. This offering is toned a natural coin gray and is unquestionably original. Housed in newer NGC holder with edge view insert.

Briggs 1-A Choice $1795 Scarce Grade, Choice Original, Deep Gray Patination, LaSalle Collection. 2025 Black Friday Sale Offering - The 1867 quarter sits amid a run of low-mintage Philadelphia dates, struck during a period when hard money was scarce and paper substitutes filled the void. Only 20,000 pieces were struck in this year, and, like the 1866 quarter, business strikes are more desirable than proofs. Fortunately, these are easily distinguished, with circulation pieces exhibiting weakness in the obverse shield ribbon. That is clearly the case here, with several letters of LIBERTY indistinct. This piece reveals deep coin gray patination on both sides with embedded golden hues seen under a bright light. Under the toning, steely fields are revealed. Regardless of time during post-Civil War commerce, this piece is essentially unabraded with a typical strike. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder.

Choice $9500 New May 13! Near Gem. PCGS Population of 5 with 10 higher graded. My (DL) former set coin. It was purchased from the DLRC Richmond Collection in 2005 in an NGC-62 holder and kept for 10 years until it was sold into a friend's collection of Seated quarters that ultimately was sold to purchase the legendary 1795 Sheldon-79 large cent. Since then, it has been crossed into a PCGS-62 holder and looks much better in this holder. The luster is superb on this well struck coin. The toning is a rust color that doesn't impact the luster. There are traces of light rub on the obverse which explains the grade as there are no marks of note. The reverse show no wear. This is one of the best dates in the Seated quarter series.

Choice $6000 New May 13! Good Originality and Detail. The 1872-CC and 1872-S quarters are considered the fourth or fifth toughest dates in the Seated quarter series behind the big 3 of 1870-CC, 1871-CC and 1873-CC with arrows. From an absolute rarity, my (DL) opinion is that the 1872-CC is fourth. This coin displays nice originality and is far more original than most in straight graded holders. The detail is good for a Fine-15 coin. The diagnostic diagonal line towards the bottom of the shield to authenticate 1872-CC quarters is worn, but plainly visible. There are two old, toned over lines on the obverse mentioned for accuracy. One is vertical from star 7 and another one runs from Miss Liberty's thigh to the Y in the shield.

New May 2! 40,000 Mintage. Top 25 Variety. Rare Closed 3 Variety, Low CAC Pop.. This coin was previously sold by GFRC in March 2019 where Gerry noted that only 10 CAC examples of all grades had been stickered. More than 7 years later only one additional coin has been stickered with two more at CACG. This coin is the lowest graded CAC piece and CAC coins in the VF grade sell for more than double the price of this coin. This coin has much honest wear but without issues. This gray-brown piece has few issues taking into account its heavy use in commerce. Some wear into the rims in places but a great piece for those adding varieties to their Seated quarter collection.

Briggs 2-B Choice $3995 Underrated Date, Choice Original, Crusted Gray Patina, LaSalle Collection.. Consignor Price Redution - The 1875-CC issue can be overlooked, standing beside the giants of the 1870-1873 Carson City run. This piece is scarce in its own right with a relatively low mintage of 140,000 pieces, and all Carson City issues have a special appeal within American numismatics. So noted for this new Lasalle Collection consignment. A thick coin gray patina nicely protects the obverse while a light reverse center provides access to the soft frosted luster. The Type II reverse is typically struck with residual mint frost evident within the protected areas. Housed in new large font NGC holder. PCGS #5499.

This is one of the tougher dates that is harder to find with a CAC endorsement than the mintage would indicate. This is a strictly original coin that is decently struck with light grey surfaces. Gem $14500 Condition Census Offering, Exceptional Eye Appeal, Gem Original. A very special GFRC offering, this condition census 1878-S offering presents undisturbed steely-frosted luster and active cartwheels under a bright light. The coloration is as equally pleasing as the luster, though difficult to fully illustrate with my images. Light rose patination is uniformly layered across the obverse with a thin aquamarine arc at the periphery. The reverse toning colors are identical though less extensive. The strike is essentially complete with star 8 lacking a center point. Fields are pristine with only a minor and toned over contact pioint between the mintmark and denomination being seen with 10x. Let's move on to grade rarity as this is the key reason for placing a coin of this caliber in an advanced collection. Briggs opines that the date is scarcer than the 140,000 mintage would suggest due to melting for the new Morgan dollars. Circulated examples can be found but many have issues consistent with western frontier commerce. Checking the PCGS guide for the gem populaiton , there are two graded MS65, an MS65+, and two at MS66. The CAC gem approved population is 16 in all grades with two at MS65 and a single MS66. So where does this NGC MS65+ fit into this upper census? Based on my eyes, this example is full MS65 and unquestionably original. The offer price is a tad below CAC MS65 guide as the PCGS numbers are much too aggressive. The current plan is to offer this lot at the Manchester NH and Baltimore shows, and if not sold, it is heading to CAC for review with the associated price bump if it stickers. Now is your opportunity to front run that submission or another buyer. Housed in a new large font NGC holder.

New March 24! Ex-John McCloskey. Popular scarce O-Mint of the Last Year for Liberty Seated Coinage. From the 1879-1891 late date Seated quarters, the scarcest dates are the 1886 and 1891-O. With a mintage of 68,000, the 1891-O quarter was the first O-Mint quarter produced since 1860. This coin is original light grey and has smooth surfaces with only light marks. Accurately graded with the obverse being closer to VF35 and the reverse VF30. CAC has endorsed 44 examples in all grades with 13 in the VF20-VF35 range. This coin initially sold at the Feb. 2022 Heritage Auction sale for $3,360.
