Choice $4750 WB-2R Baseball Die Crack. Colorful Rim Toning. PCGS Plate Coin. This is the PCGS CoinFacts Plate Coin for this variety. The Baseball Die Crack variety is popular and easily recognizable with a pair of reverse arcing cracks which look like the stitching of a baseball. This example is an advanced die state, with near-terminal cracks at the base of (AM)ERICA. This is a white coin with colorful peripheral toning over lustrous surfaces. The surfaces have a fair number of lines. Rated R-5 (31-75 examples known) by Bugert.

Choice $495 Great Color and Luster; Clean Surfaces. This coin was featured in our April 21st blog, "Almost CAC Quality" coins. This one has crusty gray dirt patina. There is an ancient, dull scratch thru the shield on the reverse and a few similar-era toned over scratches in the obverse field but the original antique patina more than makes up for these minor imperfections.

New July 27! Ultimate #31 WB-1, Near-Choice, Newtown Collection. Ex. Spring Branch and Newtown Collections. Silver surfaces are highlighted by gold and olive patina in the protected areas, and both shields host moderate crust. Nicely struck, with defined star centers and distinct claw joints, and the overall design definition is more consistent with an EF45 grade. WB-1, with a die line from the rock, under the right foot, extending to the rim. The reverse reveals a die crack through the base of UNITED in addition to a heavy, distinct crack within HALF DOL. The latter crack has created sufficient vertical clearance to collect dirt and is neatly outlined as such, making this an easy coin to attribute. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder.

Choice $460 New June 26! Cool WB-6 Die State with Fascinating Cud in Reverse Shield. This WB-6 die state has a repunched date on the obverse and and extensively cracked reverse. This one has small internal cud in the shields vertical lines. According to Bugert, "these internal cuds are rare in the Liberty Seated half dollar series but scarce on this die marriage." The coin is choice and original except for some disturbance in the right obverse field but the coin has a nice look.

Mixed gold and olive patina richly covers both sides, with occasional crust evident in the shields and rock. Luster is steely, with some cartwheel remaining. WB-10, with obverse die doubling evident in the stars and date. This piece is worthy of study with a glass, as other doubling points will be located with careful examination. The Medium Date is characterized by the serifs of 4, which nearly touch. Typically struck, with stars 11-13 lightly impressed. CAC has certified 46 pieces, with 14 coins in Mint State grades. A great coin to pass around at a Seated half dollar summit or similar gathering of like-minded collectors. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.6 (2013-2014) holder with CAC approval.

Gem $14500 New August 13! Price Reduction - Condition Census, Superb Gem Original, Steely Reflectance, New Orleans Collection. The New Orleans Collection makes a splash with the release of one of the finest 47-O half dollars extant, with just a single MS65+ graded finer at PCGS. While the mintage of 2,584,000 was sizable for the era, Mint State survivors are unfrequently encountered with any Mint State example being an important rarity in MS64 or finer. Our WB-2 example excels under a bright light with steely reflective fields that are the epitome of undisturbed viewing. The luster is uniform on both sides and a further testament of the unquestionable originality. Though the GFRC images indicate darkly toned surfaces, bright light inspection is a completely different experience with light pastel rose and sky blues dominating the luster. Reverse presentation is similar with golden hues within the legend lettering. The strike is complete and the fields are pristine. This coin has all the hallmarks of a gem and is in the condition census. Advanced Liberty Seated half dollars collectors should take note as the PCGS price guide is $22,500 as reference. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2025) holder.

Gem $45000 Condition Census, Gem Original, Newtown Collection.. Consignor Price Reduction - Production of silver coinage began falling in 1850, as increasing supplies of gold caused an imbalance in the valuation of silver. Congress corrected the problem only with the Coinage Act of 1853, leaving the Mint to coin a decreasing supply of silver bullion in the intervening years. This low-mintage piece exhibits liberal copper and aqua patina, and the overall eye appeal merits the GFRC Gem designation. Ample luster imparts slight reflectivity to the surfaces. Stars are sharp, while the left claws remain separated, if faintly so. WB-4, with a tine to the upper left of 1. CAC has approved 28 coins total, with a single coin in MS65 (the present coin) and only one piece finer, at MS67. The CAC price guide value is $36,000 (CAC does not price plus grades), while the PCGS value at the MS65+ level is $60,000. Ex. GFRC, August 2023, at $53,000. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with CAC approval. PCGS #6264.

The upper left loop of the 8 digit and the crossbar of the 4 remain visible and can be cherrypicked with a 10x loupe. Most enough seen in circulated grades and very scarce in Mint State consistent with the 1855 Philadelphia issue in general.
