Choice $795 New May 22! Difficult Type 2 Coin. Lustrous with Few Marks. From the Evergreen collection. It is fascinating that while the silver content was reduced in 1853 for the half dime, dime, quarter, and half dollar, the silver in 3 cent silvers was actually increased changing rom 75% silver to 90% silver. This coin is lustrous with few marks. The coin exhibits the normal striking weakness found on Type 2 3cS coins. The mintage of Type 2 3cS is a fraction of the Type 1 3cS coins.

J-267 Choice $7300 New May 14! Rare with about 100 Known! The Coin without a Country. In 1859-1860, the half dime and dime changed to having United States of America moved from the obverse to the reverse. During this transition period, some 1860 half dimes were struck with the new With Stars Obverse. However, some coins were paired with the 1859 reverse which doesn't have United States of America on the back, thus the "Coin without a Country." PCGS now calls these Transitional and a Judd-267 pattern number has been assigned to these rare transitional coins. This coin has attractive and original rust purple toning over lustrous surfaces. It is well struck with the exception of stars 9 and 10 on the obverse. There is one line on the right obverse field near stars 12 and 13. While these coins are certainly rare, it is the story that makes this a fascinating conversation piece to non-collectors.

The 1872-CC and 1872-S quarters are considered the fourth or fifth toughest dates in the Seated quarter series behind the big 3 of 1870-CC, 1871-CC and 1873-CC with arrows. From an absolute rarity, my (DL) opinion is that the 1872-CC is fourth. This coin displays nice originality and is far more original than most in straight graded holders. The detail is good for a Fine-15 coin. The diagnostic diagonal line towards the bottom of the shield to authenticate 1872-CC quarters is worn, but plainly visible. There are two old, toned over lines on the obverse mentioned for accuracy. One is vertical from star 7 and another one runs from Miss Liberty's thigh to the Y in the shield.

Choice $5950 New May 13! Near Gem. This near gem is one of the key dates to the series. It's color is a very attractive battleship grey with light pink and peach iridescence with a lot of underlying luster. The surfaces are very smooth with only a few small marks in the obverse field keeping it from a gem grade. The reverse is pristine. Both sides are very well struck with excellent detail, even at the centers, notwithstanding the XF grade. You can even see Libery's thumb on her left hand.

New May 2! 40,000 Mintage. Top 25 Variety. Rare Closed 3 Variety, Low CAC Pop.. This coin was previously sold by GFRC in March 2019 where Gerry noted that only 10 CAC examples of all grades had been stickered. More than 7 years later only one additional coin has been stickered with two more at CACG. This coin is the lowest graded CAC piece and CAC coins in the VF grade sell for more than double the price of this coin. This coin has much honest wear but without issues. This gray-brown piece has few issues taking into account its heavy use in commerce. Some wear into the rims in places but a great piece for those adding varieties to their Seated quarter collection.

Choice $1995 New May 2! Rotated Reverse. Scarce Date. 1844-O half dimes are one ot the better dates in the Seated half dime series. Some varieties of this date are medal turn which means the obverse and reverse are oriented the same way (no need to turn the coin up or down to orient the reverse). This coin is not exactly 180 degree medal turn and is designated by PCGS as a mint error with 170 degrees rotation. This small O reverse variety has good luster. It is well struck on the obverse and weaker struck on the reverse particularly in the right side of the wreath. The obverse has some small ticks and marks. The reverse is attractive with mostly copper toning and hints of magenta and blue toning.
