JR-9 Gem $5250 New August 21! Gem at Grade, Steely-Frosted Luster, Vibrant Cartwheels. Ex. Evergreen and Osprey Collections. The steely frosted fields on this GFRC-Gem rated 1821 JR-9 dime are captivating. A stunning open collar Capped Bust dime that would be ideal for type or placement in an advanced date set. Under angled lighting, the luster is sharp and brilliant with swirling cartwheels adding to the viewing pleasure. A complete strike, with meticulously defined hair curls and elevated start center points, further enhances the presentation. Surfaces are essentially unabraded with two well hidden hairlines on the lower obverse that warrant mention and most likely correlate to the certified grade. However, the eye appeal is that of a higher grade.

Choice $7950 New August 21! Patched 3, Exceptional Eye Appeal, Brilliant Frosted Luster, Vibrant Cartwheels, Very Scarce CAC Approved. A luscious 1823 O-101a Patched 3 offering that would be a highlight in an advanced Capped Bust half dollar collection. Beautifully preserved with a stunning presentation of brilliant frosted luster and surrounding copper-gold and aquamarine-blue peripheral toning at the rims. A few luster breaks in the left obverse field account for the technical grade. Eye appeal however, is that of a higher grade. Mint worker efforts to "patch" the center of the digit is easily seen under 10x. This is a low CAC population variety that is always popular. Only three have been approved at this grade level with six finer. The pricing premiums grow much more substantial at Choice Mint State. I like this piece so much that a JUST BUY IT NOW recommendation is warranted as this is such a pretty example. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 holder with CAC approval.

Apricot-gray, blue, and golden-orange shades decorate the obverse while slate-gray gives way to orange-tinged borders on the reverse. Choice $2600 New August 20! Open 3, Choice Original. Ex. Evergreen and Massachusetts Collections. The 1873 No Arrows Open 3 date continues to be underrated for its overall scarcity. It just does not garner an respect and is the Rodney Dangerfield of the dime series. The PCGS and CDN price guides are much too conservative given that only 19 are stickered with four better and the finest MS65 Fortin specimen realizing $13,500 at auction. This F-101 example exhibits thick frosted luster and a complete strike. Light gold patina is evident on both sides. Circular die cracks throughout the wreath exactly match those for the F-101 Liberty Seated dime die variety plate coin. This near-gem example offers old time eye appeal at a fair reserve. Gem $750 New August 20! Gem Original, Lustrous Pastel Toning, Fully Struck. Ex. Evergreen and Birmingham Collections. This is the third time that GFRC has the pleasure to offer this lovely 1886 Seated dime. Pastel toning is the highlight with intermixed aquamarine, gold and rose coloring on the obverse and mottled gray, ebony and rose on the reverse. Bright light viewing exposes the luster and accentuates the colors. The overall strike is crisp with no signs of weakness. Same for blemishes as none were seen. If this dime has just a bit more flashy luster, then it would be a candidate for MS66 designation. In the current PCGS holder, it is accurately graded. New August 19! Double Die Obverse, Gem Original, Hammered Strike, Conservative Grading.. Ex. Evergreen. Lets start the description for this gem 1856 Small Date dime with a strong recommendation. Why? Most collectors don't understand that the 1856 date, though common, is notorious for weak and uneven strikes. Fully struck mint state examples that are not blast white or creamy white are rare! Enter into the equation this gem example that is housed in early PCGS old green holder. The strike is absolutely hammered throughout obverse and reverse without any signs of weakness. Every star, every vein in each wreath leaf and Liberty's head are deeply impressed and crisp. It is such a joy to inspect this piece with a 10x loupe. Surfaces are strictly original with golden-rose patina. The fields do have a few scattered ticks but far from distracting. This is also the F-111 double die obverse variety with bold diagnostics throughout the shield, scroll and lower gown lines.

Gem $5750 New August 15! Magnificent Gem, Granular Frosted Luster, Vibrant Cartwheels, Rare Die Pairing. Ex. Evergreen Collection. GFRC is thrilled to be offering one of the finest 1877-S dimes extant along with being a rare R5 die pairing per my research as published in the Liberty Seated Dime die variety online reference. This is a magnificent gem with granular frosted luster and vibrant cartwheels. A speckled natural gray patina overlays the obverse while the reverse is a lighter uniform gray with gold and rose shades appearing under angled lighting. The surfaces are meticulously preserved too! Now let's move on to the importance of this die pairing in terms of rarity. The F-111 variety is the last of the three different reverse die pairings (F-109, F-110, F-111) with Obverse 7. Reverse C, which was previously paired with the F-103 obverse, shows die wear and erosion at the denticles. There is considerable weakness in the lower left ribbon end and wreath leaves. The reverse die may have been polished after the F-103 die pairing. This is only the fourth F-111 example handled by GFRC with the next finest being a PCGS MS62 CAC example sold during May 2018. Clearly, the finest known F-111 extant. CAC has approved only 33 examples in all grades with five finer. The estimate CAC market value is currently $4900 which recognizes the 1877-S date rarity in full gem. An important offering that belongs in one of the finest Seated dime collections being assembled. Few examples are known at such a high grade level where the doubling is readily prominent and easily enjoyed. This new specimen offers even light gray surfaces along with a band of peripheral gold on both sides. Surfaces are steely reflective when placed under a bright light. A complete strike is readily evident on the obverse, which is critical for this variety while the reverse is weakly impressed at the upper left wheat grains. The two finest known examples are the Garner specimen which GFRC recently sold for $18,500 and an white NGC MS61 example which I have lost track of. Gem $2250 New July 27! Gem Original. Ex. Spring Branch and Wisconsin Gold Collections. Exceptional luster flows from the surfaces of this San Francisco five, and the GFRC Gem rating is no surprise, given the in-hand pop of the flashy fields. Even yellow-gold color blankets both sides, interrupted only by a few ticks that are consistent with the MS64+ technical grade. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with CAC approval.

Choice $800 New July 27! Well Struck and Original. This is an original and well struck example of the F-129 with doubling seen on the E in ONE on the reverse. Surfaces are attractively smooth for the grade. Light traces of rub on the obverse is the reason for the rather conservative grade from CACG.

New July 27! Ultimate #31 WB-1, Near-Choice, Newtown Collection. Ex. Spring Branch and Newtown Collections. Silver surfaces are highlighted by gold and olive patina in the protected areas, and both shields host moderate crust. Nicely struck, with defined star centers and distinct claw joints, and the overall design definition is more consistent with an EF45 grade. WB-1, with a die line from the rock, under the right foot, extending to the rim. The reverse reveals a die crack through the base of UNITED in addition to a heavy, distinct crack within HALF DOL. The latter crack has created sufficient vertical clearance to collect dirt and is neatly outlined as such, making this an easy coin to attribute. Housed in a PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder.

New July 27! Gem Original. Ex. Spring Branch and Newtown Collections. Medium crust reveals a layer of golden skin atop the frosty surfaces of this GFRC-rated Gem example, with deeper blue-gray color at the rims. WB-1, with the top of a 6 in the dentils below the rightmost 6. The reverse die cracks are not yet developed. Star points are evident, while the detail around the eagles left leg is less distinct.
